The World Bank Strategic Program for Climate Resilience (SPCR) in Malawi is due to start up a US$50 million aimed at investment projects in agriculture, fisheries and water resources as well as in climate information services. The latter will include setting up a Climate Services Centre to provide relevant, user-friendly and timely weather, water and climate information for planners and other end-users.
The strategy has the following investment areas, as follows:
- Proposed Investment Project 1: Climate Resilient Integrated Watershed Management, PPCR budget of $25M, co-financing sought: $59M
- Proposed Investment Project 2: Building Climate Change Resilience in Selected Agricultural Value Chains in Malawi PPCR budget of $10M, co-financing sought: $16M
- Proposed Investment Project 3: Sustainable Fisheries Sector and Fisheries Value Chain in Malawi through Improved Climate Resilient Lake Ecosystem Conservation and Management; PPCR budget of $10M, co-financing sought: $8.2M
- Proposed Investment Project4: Strengthening Climate Resilience of Smallholder Farmers in Malawi; PPCR budget of $, co-financing sought: $0M; Co-financing sought: $13.5M
- Proposed Investment Project 5: Operationalizing Malawi’s Climate Services Centre; PPCR budget of $5M, co-financing sought: $12.5M
Project 1 objective is to support communities in the Shire basin build resilience to the adverse impacts of changes in current climate variability and projected future changes in climate (for example, increasing temperatures) through sustainable watershed management practices that protect local ecosystems and increase livelihood options.
Project 5 of the SPCR is focusing on establishing operational climate services centres which are aimed at providing people and organisations with timely, tailored climate-related knowledge and information, focusing on shorter-range forecasts. The ongoing and upcoming investments in designated parts of the value chain of Malawi’s climate service range from expanding monitoring coverage to establishing standard operating procedures.
Component 2 of the project will focus on the development, production and delivery of a programme of sector-specific and timely climate information products and services.
The NAP Process will complement this by developing:
- set of nationally agreed CC scenarios
- Sectoral climate risk assessments to inform adaptation planning at medium to longer-scale
- Climate risk mapping platform developed collating data sets and information in order to facilitate adaptation planning and programming
